A Feast of Fools

(This was written on 1 April, 2011, as an angry response to a pamphlet published by the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad at JNU.)

Tonight's ABVP pamphlet, as always, is a - shall we say - lyrical tribute to Bharat Maata and her 'nationalist' sons, full of patriotic feeling and Tiranga-waving (one can almost hear the Vande Matarams echoing in the background) over the momentous event of India's 'historic win' against Pakistan in the World Cup semi-final.'Wednesday's match was a historic one,' roar the pamphleteers, 'And it was also an emotional moment for the cricket fans of both the nations. The Media termed it was a war and in fact it was no less than a war for millions of people in both the countries,' effortlessly conflating - in true mock-epic fashion! (Alexander Pope would be so proud) - yet another game of cricket with the various bloody wars India and Pakistan have fought over the years. 'But there are a section of the students who do not want a peaceful atmosphere in this campus,' the pamphlet laments,

There was deliberate teasing of a few enthusiastic students by some anti-national & pro-Pak students. These separatists were cheering for Pakistan in the hostels in a shameless manner and were also taunting the Indian team all the while targeting students who were cheering for India. This resulted in some verbal duel in some of the hostels. But things took an ugly turn when an anti-national pro-Pakistan student hit the students cheering for India with a water bottle in a particular hostel. This act of physical attack agitated some of the students but the matter was soon sorted out by some senior students. ABVP condemns such act of physical violence by these anti-national students.

The horror, the horror!

Of course, having witnessed the aforementioned 'ugly' incident at Tapti hostel on occasion of this very 'historic' event, I cannot help but question our nationalist pamphleeters' grasp of 'history', as the so-called 'deliberate teasing' of the 'few' innocently 'enthusiastic' students was in fact a simple act of clapping when Virender Sehwag's wicket fell - an act that is just like declaring war against the nation. Yes sir, in mock-epic 'logic' if you're not with us you're against us, a cricket match is war and daring to clap when Sehwag's wicket falls is equivalent to sedition (off with their heads!). Never mind the fact that the 'enthusiastic' 'nationalists' in question were in fact standing up and 'celebrating' every boundary scored with grotesque pelvic thrusts and obscene hand gestures, peppered with abuse, directed towards the 'anti-national & pro-Pak' - that is to say, bearded and visibly Muslim - students; refusing to tone down their 'celebrations' despite repeated requests from a number of people present (including yours truly). And the 'agitation that was soon sorted out'? It involved - among other things - one 'nationalist' attempting to attack the 'anti-nationals' with a crutch, grabbed from a disabled student present at the venue. But that - our historian-pamphleteers would say - was the result of unfortunate 'agitation,' after some 'deliberate teasing' by the anti-national brigade (no doubt just like the scuffle that broke out in Ganga Dhaba this evening, and in Chandrabhaga about half an hour ago). That was warranted. They asked for it. 'They' always do.

'Bharat mein yadi rehna ho to Vande Mataram kehna hoga,' ends the pamphlet, oh-so-ominous. One wonders what Bharat Maata would have to say about that.

Perhaps she would weep.
